The Co-operative Group has confirmed chief executive Richard Pennycook has joined its board of directors.
His appointment to the board follows a vote by members in August last year that saw the society radically reform its corporate governance.
That vote saw the creation of a new-look board largely made up of independent non-executive directors, as well as two executive directors and three member-elected directors. Previously, the CEO was not a member of the society’s board.
In November, two independent non-executive directors were appointed to the board – Sir Christopher Kelly and Simon Burke. Pennycook was appointed CEO in September, having previously held the role of interim CEO following the resignation of Euan Sutherland in March.
