Munir Malik has stepped down from the group board of The Co-op Group following an internal investigation into claims made about his qualifications.

Malik is an elected Co-op Group member for its South East region and was elected to the group board in May last year.

“In his election materials he said he was a qualified chartered accountant, and he wasn’t,” a Co-op insider said. “We’ve been running an enquiry into conduct and leaks, and holding people up to a high level of accountability and standards. This is about us clearing our stables out.”

Malik’s departure comes two weeks after fellow board member Stuart Ramsay stepped down following an investigation into how details of former group CEO Euan Sutherland’s pay package were leaked to the media.
