New Wal-Mart role 

Wal-Mart has named Bill Simon as chief operating officer of Wal-Mart Stores US. In a new role for the retailer, Simon will oversee five operations presidents who look after 3,400 stores, and will also manage Wal-Mart Stores' pharmacy and optical businesses and in-store medical clinics. It has also appointed Pat Curran as executive vice president of people. 

Wilson joins Dawson 

Simon Wilson is set to join Croydon-based wholesaler Dawson News as retail business manager. Wilson, who starts the role in June, joins from WH Smith Travel, where he was supply chain manager. He will be responsible for Dawson's national accounts team, field sales manager and retail sales managers. 

Dunnhumby signing 

Marketing consultancy and Tesco Clubcard operator Dunnhumby has appointed Markku Koppinen as group chief operating officer. Koppinen joins from the multinational IT firm ThoughtWorks, where he was the global chief operating officer across six regions worldwide. 

Young high-flyer 

Sam Wright has been given responsibility for six Aldi stores in the north west at just 24-years old. Wright has enjoyed a meteoric rise at the discounter since joining its graduate recruitment scheme in 2004 from the University of Central Lancashire and ran Aldi's Ashton-under-Lyne store for more than two years.
