Retail workers, it would, seem, are surrounded by too many things they want to take home - and so face higher personal debts than their counterparts in other industries.

A survey of 2,300 workers found one in four retail workers had outstanding unsecured debt of at least £10,000, compared with one in five across other sectors.

Greater exposure to desirable products was to blame, said James Falla, director of debt consultancy Thomas Charles, which commissioned the research. "We hope this survey will encourage employers to provide greater support for employees in financial trouble."
