It's not every day that you get to see a football legend in the flesh - at a cash and carry. So that might be why hundreds of people braved the November weather to catch a glimpse of World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst at the opening of a refurbished Makro store in Rayleigh, Essex, last week.

Sir Geoff, hat-trick hero in England's 1966 World Cup victory, and who hails from the area, was the guest of honour at the event, where Makro showed the world the fruits of a £5m investment in refitting the store.

Improvements include an increase in the number of fresh meat and fish products available, including the introduction of a cut-and-collect butchery service.

Specialists in meat, fish and wine have been employed to give customers one-to-one knowledge and information.

The Rayleigh store is the second of 33 Makro UK stores to be refitted.

The first was in Charlton, a year ago this week.
