Pepsi is launching a premium cola next year that uses sugar cane rather than corn syrup in its first addition to the brand in more than a decade.

Raw will initially be targeted at the on-trade early next year in order to build awareness before being launched into retail later in 2008.

Pepsi confirmed the launch but would not give details of the brand's strategy or pricing. However, a spokeswoman said that despite the use of sugar cane it was not intended to be positioned as a healthy cola, but a more premium version of Pepsi instead.

Pepsi launched Pepsi Max in 1993 followed by Pepsi Max variants in 1995.
