A row has broken out between Northern Foods and the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association over the application to grant the pies Protected Geographical Indication status.
Northern Foods has challenged the association’s PGI application for its members. PGI designation would allow only pork pies made, processed or prepared within 25 miles of Melton Mowbray to carry the name of the town.
The application is currently with the European Commission for approval and if the process follows the usual timescales, this last stage will be completed in a year.
Northern Foods says the PGI application could hit sales of many firms using the name Melton Mowbray to sell their pies.
Matthew O’Callaghan, chairman of the MMPPA, responded: “I’m disappointed, especially after we widened the designated area to include Nottingham, where Northern Foods has a pork pie factory.”
