Defra has appointed John Godfrey CBE as the new chairman of the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, replacing John Bridge.

One of the founders of the National Pig Association and a former director of Bpex, Godfrey brings a wealth of experience in pig farming to the AHDB at a time when pork prices and pig supply chain relations are very much in the limelight.

In addition to his pig farming activities, Godfrey also has a large arable business.

NFU president Peter Kendall said he was pleased to see "a farmer" and "levy-payer" in charge of AHDB. Godfrey now needed to ensure he drove "a culture of delivery for the AHDB" and proved to farmers that the AHDB was "effective and efficient", he said.

Godfrey's term will run until March 2014, and he will receive an annual salary of £52,000 on the basis of two days' work per week.
