Pigmeat prices began to rise this week, according to major suppliers, with one confirming this was driven by retailers rather than the market itself - as was reported in last week's issue of The Grocer (p50).

Richard Lowe, the British Pig Executive's marketing director, said he believed prices were "edging up" but added: "It's very difficult to ascribe this to any particular issue."

Tulip, a major supplier of pork to Tesco, was believed to be in talks with the retailer over price rises this week. It is understood these would be intended to relieve pressure on farmers.
