Waitrose is using Pink Lady apples grown in South Africa and Australia to boost the sales of European Gala at the start of the season.
A free apple will be included in polybags holding eight to 10 fruit on a month’s promotion starting this week, rsp: £1.89.
Gala will initially be sourced from France and Austria and then the UK when picking starts in about a fortnight.
With South Africa and Australia’s Pink Lady season finishing, there is currently not enough volume for pre-packs. The next crop sold in its own right will be European - 90% French - which is not harvested until the end of this month.
