The single use seals are crucial for helping to prevent lorry security breaches

Nestlé UK’s logistics team has extended its drive to find new ways to help the environment with a switch to biodegradable security seals for its fleet.

It has sourced what it says it the world’s first biodegradable security seal, from Mega Fortris Group, that can be biologically broken down once used.

Nestlé UK says the seals are crucial for helping to prevent lorry security breaches and to indicate when a load might have been tampered with.

Now every load departing the Kit Kat manufacturer’s sites will use the biodegradable seals.

The decision comes after it ran an exercise to find opportunities to reduce waste and improve its logistics operation’s sustainability.

“Everybody at Nestlé is increasingly conscious of how we use plastic and these seals, which are simply thrown away once used, were an obvious and very visible single use of plastic in our area,” said Nestlé UK & Ireland head of logistics Richard Hastings.

“We set about looking for a better option and that’s when we got in touch with Mega Fortris. We will now switch to the new biodegradable seal for all of our loads to make a small but important change to the impact of our plastic waste.”

Mega Fortris UK MD Keith Edgar said it was aware of the impact plastic waste was having on everyday lives, and was continually working on “sustainability to the environment”.
