Freshfel Europe has called on new agriculture commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel to reverse a 33% cut in the EU’s promotional budget for fruit and vegetables.
The European fresh produce trade body said a decision by the Commission to slash the annual budget from E6m to E4m was at odds with a pledge by health and consumer protection commissioner Markus Kyprianou to fight obesity in the EU.
A spokesman said: “An inadequate intake of fresh fruit and vegetables has been identified as one of the main causes of obesity, both in Europe and worldwide.”
