More consumers are splashing out on fine wines, the major multiples have revealed.
Waitrose said that its sales of fine wine had increased 10% over the past year, while Sainsbury revealed that premium wines were growing faster than cheaper wines.
Tesco added that it had introduced more than 50 wines over £6 in its stores since August this year.
Tim How, chief executive of Majestic Wine, which yesterday revealed a 43% sales increase in wines over £20, said: “It’s not huge, but it has been steady for the past 10 years or so. People are moving away from liebfraumilch and Australian chardonnay to pinot grigio and sauvignon blanc.”
