The pork industry is calling on retailers to help plug a major R&D funding gap.

Members of the Pig Meat Supply Chain Task Force met last month to discuss how to raise funding for research projects as government funding declines.

"The aim should be to open a new dialogue with the multiple retailers to identify objectives that fulfil both their requirements and those of primary producers," it said in papers filed with Defra.

Those may include animal health, environmental R&D and improving processing techniques.
