A glut of poultry continues to overshadow the market, according to DEFRA estimates.
The amount of poultry in public cold storage for late June was 56,700 tonnes against 53,300t a year earlier.
Fish stocks were also up from an estimated 37,400t to 41,400t, although traders said this was a reflection of increased demand rather than an excess of cheap product.
The beef stock estimate, down to 30,000t from 32,300t, conflicted with reports of oversupply in the wholesale trade. Other commodities were much as expected, pork and bacon stocks lighter than a year earlier, while a slightly heavier tonnage of lamb was in store, due to the revival of imports from New Zealand and Australia.
