Poundland’s like-for-like sales rose 4.4% for the five weeks to 3 January.

Total sales at the single-price discounter were up 34.8% for the period, and Poundland said it planned to offer permanent employment to 360 temporary workers recruited over Christmas.

“The increase in shoppers over Christmas 2009 is yet more proof that Poundland continues to offer both quality and value,” said chief executive Jim McCarthy.

“With more and more customers spreading the weekly shop across several stores to help their budget stretch further, we are confident sales will continue to reflect this customer trend throughout 2010 and beyond.”

Additionally, the retailer plans to open eight new stores before the end of the financial year March 2010, creating a further 250 jobs.
