Poundland will launch an e-commerce website in the first half of 2013, The Grocer can reveal.

The discounter said it had ironed out most of the problems involved in taking its offer online, and was working on the right pricing structure for postage and packing.

“The team is in place, the research is mostly done,” said CEO Jim McCarthy. “Now we are just testing systems and should be able to make a choice as to whether we go early in the year or in the middle. But it will be in the first six months.”

Last week, Poundland announced a 50% jump in pre-tax profits and like-for-like volume growth of 2.3%, which McCarthy said was “pretty stellar” in the current climate.
