Single-price discounter Poundland enjoyed a bumper Christmas, with like-for-like sales up 5.9% for the five weeks to 1 January.

The retailer attracted record customer numbers in the final week before Christmas, with 5.5 million shoppers snapping up last-minute purchases. Total sales for the period were up 24.9% year on year, the company said.

“In the current economic climate, our like-for-like sales growth of just under 6% is very encouraging and demonstrates that Poundland has great appeal to millions of customers who want or need to save their money,” said chief executive Jim McCarthy.

During the period Poundland sold 24.5 million Christmas cards, 10,000 miles of wrapping paper, four million Toblerone bars and just over three million boxes of Maltesers.

Poundland also said it had offered over 500 permanent jobs to people hired on a temporary basis during the festive period.
