A new type of premium sausage made from a rare breed of pig is due to be launched in Sainsbury's next month under the maker's brand.

Gloucestershire Oldspots sausage is being made by specialist producer Powters of Newmarket and will go into 25 stores in East Anglia.

Local pork is used according to an old recipe that includes cider and apples. Slow-maturing Gloucestershire Oldspot animals were chosen for their rich flavour and high fat marbling, which has been bred out of commercial pigs but remains popular among chefs.

Oldspots sausages will go on sale in September, retailing at £2.99 for 400g packs.
