The price of our basket of meat and fish fell this week by 2.6% from four weeks ago to a level similar to that on January 17. One item rose in the latest survey and six fell.
Pork chops fell 8.9% on four weeks ago while the price of bacon remained static. However, our survey does not take account of changes in pigmeat product prices that were beginning to occur at the time of going to press.
When we revisit our meat and fish basket in a few weeks’ time, we expect to find a sharp rise in the price of bacon and pork chops.
Beef supplies in our survey came from the UK and Ireland, illustrating that while South American imports are increasing, they are still a small part of the overall market.
Reports circulating this week that imports are flooding the market at the expense of domestically produced meat are exaggerated, according to some industry insiders.
