Asda is continuing to dominate its traditional supermarket rivals on price as it racked up its eighth consecutive Grocer 33 victory.
The Walmart-owned retailer’s total of £57.70 was £3.81 cheaper than nearest rival Tesco, as it offered the cheapest price for 22 of the 33 items on our shopping list. Indeed, 12 of these were exclusively cheaper than any of its rivals’ prices.
Despite the convincing nature of its win, Asda still had to offer a voucher worth £4.61 off our mystery shopper’s next visit under the Asda Price Guarantee scheme.
Meanwhile, Tesco’s Brand Guarantee price-matching scheme had little impact on the overall result, with our mystery shopper receiving an instant discount of 28p, which took its total down to £61.23.
Morrisons and Sainsbury’s were third and fourth respectively this week, with both coming in more than £6 more expensive than Asda. Waitrose’s total of £70.77 was £13.07 dearer than Asda.
There continues to be widespread speculation that food prices are set to rise, but our shopping list was cheaper this week at four of the five retailers we visited than it would have been a week earlier.
Asda’s basket was £2.97 cheaper, Tesco £2.67, Morrisons 87p and Sainsbury’s 85p. Our list at Waitrose was just 5p dearer than it would have been the week before.
