Sainsbury’s Beetroot & Goats Cheese Bakes
What: Beetroot & Goats Cheese Bakes
Where: Frozen vegetarian products
How much: Rsp: £1.50/228g
Why: Beetroot looks likely to be a top flavour of 2017, with it being used by health-conscious foodie hipsters to flavour their breakfast yoghurt, according to the most recent Waitrose food trends report. This product from the Sainsbury’s Vegetarian range uses the purple root vegetable in a traditional manner but is still likely to appeal by being a healthier option, containing food blogger favourite bulgur wheat as well as spinach, which is currently hard to find in the UK’s fresh aisles.
Consumer verdict: The product appealed to a wide consumer audience, despite the vegetarian label. The “bright” and colourful pack was attractive to our testers looking for a twist on a regular veggie burger. On tasting, some consumers weren’t convinced, calling the product “earthy” and “tasteless”. However, others enjoyed the combination of flavours and said it was “tasty” and “sweet”. The bakes held together well and achieved an above-average score for texture.
