Waitrose Red Pepper & Chorizo Tortilla Slices

waitrose tortilla slice

Who: Waitrose

What: Red Pepper & Chorizo Tortilla Slices

Where: Savoury quiches

When: Launched May 2015

How much: £3.29/225g

Why: Spain’s football team may have suffered a fall from grace recently, but the nation’s food and drink has never been more popular. UK sales of Spain’s favourite wine, Rioja, rose 10.3% last year to 36.2 million litres, while Marks & Spencer reported a 15% rise in sherry sales, driven by a growth in the popularity of tapas bars. This product brings together two of Spanish cuisine’s crown jewels: chorizo and tortilla.

Consumer verdict: While the recipe intrigued our consumer panellists, the price limited interest levels. After trial, those saying they would definitely buy the product increased, but the total number that said they would definitely or probably buy fell. There was a regional divide, with testers in the North calling it “full of flavour”, while many in the South regarded the texture as soggy and the pepper flavour overpowering. The product divided opinion on most measures, resulting in a score slightly below the category norm.
