Fish pull' builds stocks Meat market analysts have become increasingly aware of the industry's vulnerability to competition from fish suppliers in the past couple of years. Now DEFRA calculations of public cold store stocks could be interpreted as supporting evidence. Fish and fish product stocks in late December totalled more than 55,000t, up about 14% from a year earlier. This was close to the 57,500t estimated for carcase meat and offal. Hard to prove but implicit in reports from the multiples is demand pull' build up of fish stocks, in contrast to oversupply and some demand weakness inflating the meat figures. Was it mere coincidence a Safeway executive recently noting shoppers' enthusiasm for the porky meaty texture' of swordfish at a time of slack sales and increasing stocks of pork?
