The smooth, full-bodied Waitrose’s (four stars out of five) Brie was certainly the best of the bunch although it cost over £2 more than its rivals’ offerings.

At £4.40 per kg, the Asda (three stars) Brie was one of the cheapest and had a surprisingly tangy aroma and its vaguely pungent aftertaste at least made it memorable. Tesco’s (two stars) effort was fine texture-wise but offered very little flavour. By contrast, Sainsbury's (two stars) offering, which also cost £4.40, was marginally more potent but a slightly rubbery texture made it equally hard to recommend.

Despite its slightly higher price, Morrisons’ (one star) line had a disappointing taste, texture and smell. This hapless, oozing fare had very little going for it.
