Asda's (two stars out of five) offering got the thumbs-up for its bargain round-pound price, but its three tiny pieces of chicken and cheap-tasting sauce disappointed.

Tesco's product (three stars) could have done with more chicken, too, but it had a tangy kick and a great vibrant colour. Morrisons' line (three stars) offered a good-sized portion of tender chicken, but its rice was bland and harder than its rivals'. Sainsbury's offering (four stars) was a great all-rounder. It looked decent enough and had a tangy taste that was full of flavour.

At £2.49, Waitrose's dish (five stars) triumphed, proving that you get what you pay for. It was bright in colour, had a flavoursome sauce, plenty of chicken and well-seasoned rice.
