Tesco (five stars) was the clear winner this week, offering both the largest pudding and the best helping of treacle. The moist, high-quality sponge almost tasted home-made.

Waitrose's pudding (three stars) didn't impress too much with its appearance, but the rich, sweet flavour gave the dessert a sense of indulgence. Asda's version (two stars) was a fairly standard offer. It had a generous helping of syrup, but the sponge was slightly too light.

Sainsbury's pudding (one star) disappointed on every level. As well as being the most expensive, it had little flavour and looked dreadful. Morrisons' offering (one star) fared little better, with a pudding drowned in syrup and featuring poor texture and little taste.
