Brussels’ total allowable catch and fish quotas put forward for 2006 have been blasted as “the worst ever” by the WWF.
Charlotte Mogensen, fisheries officer at the European Policy Office, said the proposals would not prevent further collapse of fish stocks within EU waters that are already severely depleted.
“The overall reduction in quotas is 15%, which does not have any effect for stocks near collapse. If we are to achieve sustainable fisheries, drastic measures are first needed to recover depleted stocks. “
She claimed Brussels would not propose quotas for several stocks in a critical state, leaving it up to fisheries ministers.
