Dragon fruit growers in Israel reckon they have cracked the disappointing flavour of the fruit.

Though spectacular to look at, the 'dragon fruit' pitahaya, grown on cacti, has always suffered from bland flavour. It is currently available in Waitrose and Tesco.

But growers for Agrexco are hoping to market two new varieties, Venus and Apollo, once volumes have reached exportable levels. Venus has a deep magenta flesh and good sweetness. Apollo has a yellow skin.

The mini version of the fruit, called dragon eggs in a trial last year at Asda, will be sold again in greater volume.
