Supermarkets are showing increasing interest in red onions.

The move is part of widening the selection available year-round and, as a result, the UK is finding a valuable niche market.

This season Bedfordshire Growers is expecting to market over 4,000 tonnes of European bred varieties, double that produced by its members a decade again, confirms MD Bob Taylor.

“Despite the very dry soil conditions following the summer heat, an excellent quality crop of red onions is now being lifted to be sold both pre-packed and loose,” he said.

The use of temperature- controlled storage has also made it possible for BG to provide continuity for 11 months of the year.
