I think it's overly optimistic to believe that the future of retail will be shopping online with less in-store product options. This type of shopping experience is great for those who are ferociously brand loyal. In such cases things like the amazon echo buttons etc are really useful. However, many people like to buy whatever is on offer and therefore automatic replenishment devices are of no use because they lock the consumer into only one product. For those whose main focus is budgeting, being locked into one product is counter productive because this means they are not taking advantage of other bargain and discounts which may be available. There are also those people who enjoy browsing new products and trying them out to keep things fresh and prevent themselves getting bored with always using the same things. I think that having everything automated would actually be really boring after a while. Part of the fun of shopping for me is discovering new products and driving down costs. Both of these are not possible in the new shopping model this article describes. So as with home delivery, for some it will work but there will be those who prefer to get in-store and have a browse. As with most things, there's no one rule for us all!
