Tesco’s sales in the Republic of Ireland collapsed by 5.5% in the 12 weeks to 17 August, according to the latest Kantar Worldpanel data.

Tesco’s shrinking sales saw its Irish market share fall to 25.4% from 27% a year ago. The discounters seem to be the main beneficiaries, with Aldi and Lidl growing their combined share from 15.1% to 17% - Lidl’s share grew to 8.5% and Aldi’s to 8.4%. Aldi’s 12-week sales were up 14.4% and Lidl’s sales were up 11.4%.
