Shipments of Royal Gala apples are expected to arrive earlier than last year, according to Capespan. They are scheduled for the end of February, a week earlier than last year as weather conditions have been good and new areas such as the Orange Free State have come into production. The South African apple season must compete against ever greater volumes of Royal Gala from Brazil.
Capespan also plans to extend the season for Golden Delicious and Granny Smith to late September and mid-October respectively. Controlled atmosphere storage will give a further three weeks’ availability to Pink Lady, taking it into October.
