Kumala saw growth of 28% [ACNielsen, UK off-trade sales, 12 months to May 14, 2005] the biggest increase in the top 10 apart from number 10, Australian brand Wolf Blass, which grew by 50%.
Graham Holter, editor of OLN, commented: “Once again the New World is stealing the show and the brands with huge promotional budgets emerge as the winners.”
OLN’s Wine Report for 2005, based on a survey carried out among the top 50 wine
suppliers, confirms that Australia continues to dominate in the off-trade with a 23.8% market value share, with sales up 8.2% compared with France’s 3.6% growth.
California recorded one of the strongest sales increases for its wines with growth of 20.8%. The US now has a 15.2% market share - the third biggest - just behind France’s 17.7% share.
“Unless the trends are suddenly reversed, it’s possible to foresee a time in the not-too-distant future when France is overtaken in the UK market by the Americans,” said Holter.
