SABMiller has revealed plans to donate $980,000 to South Africa’s six largest political parties.

The brewer said it was making the donations to support the development of democracy in the country.

It will distribute the money between the parties in proportion to their seats in the National Assembly.

“Political progress will remain vital to the country’s continued stability and growth but this progress requires funding and significant human resources. This is an extremely important cause and it deserves our support,” said SABMiller executive chairman Graham Mackay (pictured).

SABMiller has made donations in the run-up to the 1999, 2004 and 2009 general elections. This year’s donation, which comes ahead of next year’s elections, is almost double the size of previous contributions, reflecting years of double-digit inflation.
