Sainsbury's has found a way to extend the shelf life of its fresh meat and fish by a day.

The retailer trialled a new humidifier in one of its counters and found it kept the product fresher for longer and allowed meat to retain its bloom.

The Lakeside Fogger technology from Alfred McAlpine was so successful Sainsbury's is planning to extend the amount of time 23 of its fresh beef and pork lines remain on the counter.

"This should have a great effect on our wastage figures," said Anthony McBirnie, Sainsbury's support manager for meat and fish counters.
