Sainsbury’s is to create 10,000 jobs in its convenience store estate over the next three years.

The pledge comes as the supermarket chain opened the doors to its 500th Sainsbury’s Local store, in Southsea, this morning.

Sainsbury’s has plans to open one to two convenience stores per week and opened 49 stores in the past six months. The business is growing at nearly 20% year-on-year.

“Opening our 500th store is a real milestone in our plans to create a scale convenience business,” said Sainsbury’s convenience director Simon Twigger.

“We make sure we recruit locally. Our colleagues, like our customers, are local people committed to serving the local community.”
