One per cent milk is edging further into the mainstream, with foodservice giant Compass reporting soaring sales.

Compass said sales of 1% milk had increased fivefold since it first started offering it in February and that demand had been particularly strong over the past five months.

Compass foodservice ­director for the UK and Ireland, Mick Hickman, said Compass had introduced 1% milk as part of its pledge to offer healthier choices under the government's Responsibility Deal.
