Wine warehouse chain Majestic Wine has reported strong Christmas trading with like-for-like sales growth of 4.1% for the five weeks to 31 December.

Like-for-like sales for the nine weeks to 31 December rose by 1.2%.

“A good December performance followed a disappointing November,” added Majestic Wine CEO Tim How.

Meanwhile, investment bank Goldman Sachs has singled out Marks & Spencer as its “top pick” among retailers for strong Christmas trading, according to reports in The Times.

Goldman Sachs said M&S had a wider appeal among shoppers and a “defensive sales mix” such as value lines and its food offer.
