With fishing almost finished in Alaska, salmon importers have been assessing packs and the implications for promotional activity. Pinks are down by a third, while reds are close to last year’s total, it is reported.

However, it is in the split of pack sizes that the true picture emerges, particularly in terms of the number of 213g packs. Reds in these packs are up by 25% on last year and quarters are nearly double.

Pink prices have already been raised by 20% over last season, with reds unchanged for pre-Christmas delivery. Shipments after that carry a premium. Justifying this premium, a source in Seattle said: “We cannot continue to be the warehouse for UK supermarkets. For years we have been supportive of all-year deals, but things have got out of hand.”
