San Miguel, the Philippines food and drink maker, has said it is considering bidding for a 40% stake in Del Monte Pacific, the world’s biggest pineapple grower and canner.

The stake is currently held by Cirio, an Italian food group, currently in liquidation.

Also thought to be in the running are the Sumitomo Corporation of Japan, HJ Heinz and Fresh Del Monte Produce.

San Miguel, whose main business is brewing beer, announced in April that it would invest $45m in the company’s first non-alcoholic drinks factory in China, where the company has four breweries.
