Brewer Scottish & Newcastle has revealed that the UK beer market has been “somewhat soft” in the first quarter.

In a trading update, the brewer said that the UK market was down by nearly 2% in the period, affected by a late Easter.

Sir Brian Stewart, chairman of S&N, added: “Like all businesses, S&N is not immune to the very real cost pressures associated with energy and commodity price inflation. Our efforts to mitigate these pressures will continue to be a priority.”
