Scottish & Newcastle has revealed it will reduce the abv of cider brand White Lightning to encourage responsible drinking.

The drink's current 7.5% abv will drop to 5.5%, in a move the company hopes will appeal to more sensible drinkers who enjoy the taste of white cider.

"Having spent a number of years attempting to lead the way towards a more responsible approach to white ciders, we feel the time is right to offer the consumer a lower-alcohol alternative," said Mark Gerken, off-trade sales managing director at S&N.

The reformulated drink will roll out from May.
