The future of London's major fruit, meat and fish markets is being reviewed in a survey prepared for DEFRA by Nicholas Saphir, former Food from Britain chairman. The report is expected at the end of the month.
Saphir's study will also consider action by the Covent Garden Market Authority to attract other fresh food sectors. The move has brought it into conflict with the City of London, which owns Spitalfields, Smithfield and Billingsgate markets, whose trading terms are protected by a charter.
