Strong sales of sandwiches, chilled soups, ready meals and quiches helped Irish food group Greencore post a forecast-busting 9% rise in interim profit.
However, there was still a lot of work to do driving efficiency at the company's new pizza factory in Deeside, said chief executive David Dilger.
"Chilled pizza had a challenging first half. Much still remains to be done to generate returns. Our expectations are for considerable improvement in performance during the last quarter of this financial year."
Now the world's largest sandwich maker, Greencore has successfully trialled several ranges that would start to pay off in the second half, he added.
Group pre-exceptional, pre-tax profit for the six months to March 28 was up 9% to E31.1m. Although all divisions showed like-for-like sales growth, total sales were down from E936.5m to E743.9m due to disposals of non core businesses.
