The scallop market has experienced a surge in sales over the past year as consumers begin to experiment with the niche shellfish.

Total UK retail scallop sales rose to £12.4m in April from £9.6m a year ago [Nielsen]. Sales of frozen scallops grew even more impressively, up 371% -

albeit from a low base - from £800,000 to £3.7m today as more lines were introduced to the retail sector.

A National Scallop Group has also been set up to capitalise on growing awareness of scallops and to tackle the challenges to the sector. The group includes Tesco, Waitrose and M&S.
