Scottish farmed salmon producers have hailed a double whammy of success for their industry, with demand currently outstripping supply and exports reversing a decline that started in 2003.

The latest production statistics suggest that the production of Scottish farmed salmon is on the rise again, increasing from 129,588 tonnes in 2005 to approximately 137,000 tonnes in 2006. This represents a significant recovery from the slump early in the decade.

The 2006 exports figure is expected to show a marginal increase on the 2005 total of 57,246 tonnes. Last year UK consumption of salmon reached an all-time-high [TNS May 2006].
