Scottish Courage is tapping the resources of its new sister company Kronenbourg to bring to the UK two specialist Belgian brews. Scottish and Newcastle acquired Kronenbourg last year and with it the Alken Maes business in Belgium. From this comes Grimbergen Blond (6.7% abv) and Grimbergen Double (6.5% abv). These are targeted at the niche for imported specialist premium beers. Marketing director Brian Sharp said: "This launch allows to capitalise on the speciality beers sub-segment which is growing in volume at 12% a year against a total off-trade beer market down 1.1%." The introduction of the brands will be low key with point of sale support and instore sampling. Sharp said: "We want to build awareness slowly. There will not be huge amounts of money spent on them." The two beers will be sold in 330ml bottles retailing at £1.29. Alken Maes is the second biggest Belgian brewing business with four breweries in Belgium producing 30 different beers. {{DRINKS }}
