New varieties are changing the face of exports Spanish Superior set for push as production leaps Spanish Superior Seedless grape producers are poised to promote the crop in the UK for the first time this summer, following a boom in production. It has increased by 25% in the last two years to 16,500 tonnes with virtually everything available being exported in June, July and August. The trademarked variety was developed in the US by Sun World, which is running an ongoing research programme to develop new hybrids. There are currently 55 new varieties being trialled that have been developed specifically for Spain's climate and soil. Superior Seedless is marketed through 30 export companies on behalf of around 500 growers in the provinces of Murcia, Almería and Alicante. Both are members of Asociación Apirenas which operates an agreement as Sun World's licensee. According to Apirenas, total exports to the UK are in the region of 8,504 tonnes with 54% sold by super markets sector and the remainder through the wholesale sector.
