Sainsbury’s has provoked anger on Twitter with the rollout of new self-service tills besieged by technical problems.
Shoppers at Sainsbury’s Local branches with new card-only tills complained they were unable to put through items that needed weighing, or use the own bag function.
@sainsburys Brixton your new self service tills are rubbish. You can’t buy anything that needs weighing!— Hayley Short (@shorthayley) April 1, 2017
Another shopper said the tills, rolled out across 20 Sainsbury’s convenience stores around the country, didn’t ask for ID when buying age-restricted items.
One Twitter user reported the technical difficulties had led to queues at the New Mills store as shoppers shunned self-service tills altogether.
A Sainsbury’s spokeswoman said: “We’ve introduced card-only tills in over 20 convenience stores and supermarkets to offer customers even more choice and help them shop more easily and quickly. These are, of course, in addition to manned tills and colleagues are also always available to assist customers with their shopping.”
